Wall Street Journal Reporter Evan Gershkovich Sentenced to 16 Years in Russia on Espionage Charges
Detained While on a Reporting Trip
Moscow, Russia - March 31, 2023:
Journalist Evan Gershkovich Unjustly Convicted
A Russian court has sentenced Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, to 16 years in prison on charges of espionage. Moscow detained Gershkovich, an American-born son of Soviet immigrants, on March 29, 2023, while he was on a reporting trip.
The United States has condemned the charges against Gershkovich as "baseless" and a "blatant attempt to suppress independent journalism." Russia, on the other hand, has maintained that he collected classified information and shared it with Western intelligence agencies.
According to the Russian authorities, Gershkovich will be transferred to a high-security prison in the near future.
